Tragedy struck the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast on Saturday morning when a horrific crash on the N2 highway claimed the lives of four people. The accident, which occurred between Dokodweni and Amatigulu, has reignited urgent calls for stricter road safety enforcement along one of South Africa’s busiest and most dangerous routes.
The Fatal Crash
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly after 8:30 AM following reports of a high-impact collision involving a passenger car and a heavy goods truck. By the time first responders arrived, it was too late to save the victims. Three men and one woman had already succumbed to their injuries at the site of the crash. The vehicle they had been travelling in was so extensively damaged that it was described as “beyond repair.”
Authorities have not yet released the names of the deceased, as investigations and family notifications continue. However, officials confirmed that all four victims died instantly due to the severity of the impact.
Government Response
KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC, Siboniso Duma, expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and called for an immediate briefing from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI). He emphasized the province’s commitment to strengthening road safety and ensuring that tragedies of this nature are drastically reduced.
Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya reiterated this stance, noting that the MEC had instructed intensified operations under the Alufakwa and Zero Tolerance safety programs. These initiatives focus on increasing RTI visibility, cracking down on reckless driving, and addressing critical safety challenges such as speeding, drunk driving, and fatigue among truck drivers.
Safety Crackdowns and Roadblocks
The accident comes at a time when provincial authorities have been actively conducting multi-agency operations aimed at curbing lawlessness on the roads. Recent roadblocks across KwaZulu-Natal led to several arrests, including cases of stolen vehicles, drug possession, and motorists caught driving under the influence.
“These operations are not just about enforcement but about saving lives,” Sibiya said. “Every life lost on our roads is one too many, and we are committed to ensuring that motorists understand the seriousness of adhering to traffic laws.”

The N2 highway is one of South Africa’s most critical transport corridors, linking Durban to the northern coastal regions and beyond. Unfortunately, it has also become notorious for fatal accidents, particularly involving heavy vehicles.
