Nine schoolchildren were injured on Monday afternoon, 19 January 2026, following a frightening scholar transport accident near Sarnia School in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal. The incident, which occurred shortly before 3pm, triggered a rapid response from emergency services and caused major traffic disruptions in the area as worried parents rushed to the scene.
According to Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, the scholar transport vehicle was travelling along Sarnia Road when it reportedly lost control and crashed into a tree. The exact cause of the accident is still unclear, and authorities have launched an investigation to determine what led to the vehicle veering off the road.
Emergency teams arrived at the scene at approximately 14:45 and immediately began assessing and treating the injured children. Jamieson confirmed that the pupils sustained minor to moderate injuries and were stabilised on site before being transported to various hospitals for further medical attention. Fortunately, none of the children were reported to be in critical condition at the time of reporting.

“The scene was quite chaotic as parents made their way to the area after hearing about the crash,” Jamieson said. “Traffic congestion built up quickly due to the presence of multiple ambulances and emergency personnel.”
Motorists were advised to avoid Sarnia Road where possible to allow emergency services to operate efficiently and to reduce congestion. Police officers were also deployed to manage traffic and ensure the safety of those at the scene.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that an investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident. This incident comes on the same day as a far more devastating scholar transport crash near Vanderbijlpark in Gauteng, where at least 11 learners lost their lives. In that tragic accident, a minibus taxi transporting pupils collided with a side-tipper truck while the children were on their way to school. Several others were seriously injured and rushed to nearby hospitals.
Emergency services, police, and forensic teams responded to the Vanderbijlpark crash, and a culpable homicide investigation has since been opened. Provincial leaders, including officials from the Department of Education, expressed deep condolences to the affected families and communities, describing the incident as a heartbreaking loss of young lives.
The two accidents have once again raised serious concerns about the safety of scholar transport across South Africa. Recent reports have highlighted issues such as reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance, and inadequate monitoring of learner transport operators. In the Vanderbijlpark case, it emerged that the driver involved had allegedly been reprimanded for reckless driving just a week before the fatal crash.
