A tragic incident unfolded in the Msinga area of KwaZulu-Natal after a bakkie carrying eight people was swept away by strong floodwaters while attempting to cross a low-lying bridge. The incident occurred on Thursday night during heavy rainfall that affected several parts of the province.
According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), the group was travelling in a bakkie when the driver tried to cross a bridge that had been overwhelmed by rising water levels. The powerful current quickly swept the vehicle away, leaving the occupants trapped in a dangerous situation.

Emergency response teams were immediately alerted to the scene, and a search and rescue operation was launched. Out of the eight people who were inside the vehicle, two individuals managed to escape and reach safety. Unfortunately, the search teams later recovered two bodies from the water.
At this stage, four people are still missing, and rescue teams continue to search the surrounding area in an effort to locate them. Authorities say the operation will continue until all individuals involved in the incident have been accounted for.
COGTA officials have once again urged residents to exercise extreme caution during severe weather conditions, especially when attempting to cross bridges or roads that are flooded. Low-water bridges are particularly dangerous during heavy rain because the water flow can become strong enough to sweep vehicles away within seconds.
Officials explained that even experienced drivers can underestimate the force of moving water. When rivers overflow or stormwater accumulates on bridges, the current can easily destabilize vehicles, making it impossible for drivers to maintain control.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with severe weather conditions, particularly in rural areas where many communities rely on low-level bridges to cross rivers and streams.
Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service has issued warnings for heavy rain and severe thunderstorms across large parts of KwaZulu-Natal. The weather conditions are expected to continue, raising concerns about possible flooding in vulnerable areas.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and avoid travelling through flooded roads or attempting to cross bridges where water levels appear high. Motorists are encouraged to find alternative routes or wait until the water levels subside before proceeding.
Disaster management teams across the province remain on high alert as the storms continue to affect several districts. Emergency services are closely monitoring the situation to respond quickly to any additional incidents that may occur due to the severe weather.
Community members have also been encouraged to report flooded roads, damaged bridges, or any emergencies to local authorities so that help can be dispatched as quickly as possible.
As search and rescue operations continue in Msinga, families and community members anxiously wait for news about the missing individuals. Authorities remain hopeful that the ongoing search efforts will help bring closure to the affected families.
