Veteran South African actor and television presenter Dingaan Khumalo has publicly addressed fans who refer to him by character names and show titles instead of his real name, saying the behaviour crosses a line and feels disrespectful.
Khumalo, who rose to fame in the late 1990s as a barman on the popular soapie Generations, has built a long and successful career in the entertainment industry. Over the years, he has appeared in various productions, including Muvhango and Mamazala, making him a familiar face in many South African households.

However, with that familiarity has come a growing concern. In a recent video shared with fans, Khumalo expressed frustration over being addressed in ways he finds inappropriate when people meet him in public.
He began by acknowledging the majority of his supporters, describing them as respectful and appreciative, especially those who interact with him on social media platforms like TikTok. Despite this, he made it clear that a portion of fans have been crossing boundaries by calling him names linked to shows he has worked on, rather than using his actual name.
Khumalo firmly stated that being called “Mamazala,” “Muvhango,” or even “Moja Love” is unacceptable. Speaking in a mix of isiZulu and English, he emphasized that such behaviour shows a lack of respect and warned that he would not tolerate it going forward.

To illustrate his point, he compared the situation to randomly calling people by business names such as petrol stations or retail stores. According to him, just as he takes the time to learn and use people’s real names, he expects the same courtesy in return.
Drawing from cultural values, Khumalo highlighted the importance of names, particularly within Zulu tradition. He explained that names carry meaning and identity, and disregarding them undermines a person’s dignity. For him, being addressed properly is not just about preference but about mutual respect.
Interestingly, Khumalo noted that he is more forgiving when fans call him “James,” a character he portrays on Muvhango. He explained that while it is still not his real name, it at least reflects a specific role he plays. However, referring to him by the name of an entire show, he said, suggests intentional disrespect, especially from viewers who likely know both his character and real name.

The seasoned actor also responded to criticism from those who perceive his stance as rude. He dismissed such claims, insisting that he is simply setting boundaries. Khumalo подчеркнул that he is a grown man with many roles in life — including being a father, a brother, and a son — and deserves to be treated accordingly.
Despite his strong message, Khumalo ended on a positive note. He expressed appreciation for fans who continue to show him love and respect, encouraging them to keep engaging with him in a fun and friendly manner.
At the same time, he issued a final warning: those who continue to address him disrespectfully risk being called out publicly. For Khumalo, maintaining respect between himself and his supporters is non-negotiable.
