A devastating road accident on the N1 near Modimolle in Limpopo has claimed the lives of five people, casting a dark shadow over the start of the busy Easter travel period. The fatal crash, which occurred on the morning of April 1, 2026, involved three vehicles and left several others seriously injured.
The N1, one of South Africa’s busiest highways connecting major cities and bordering countries, became the scene of chaos following a head-on collision between a Renault sedan and two light delivery vehicles—a Ford and a Toyota bakkie. The crash happened along the stretch between Modimolle and Mookgophong, an area known for heavy traffic, especially during holiday seasons.
According to preliminary investigations by the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the accident was allegedly caused by reckless driving. Reports indicate that the driver of the Renault, who was travelling from Polokwane toward Johannesburg, attempted to make an illegal U-turn on the freeway. This dangerous maneuver placed the vehicle directly in the path of oncoming traffic, resulting in a high-impact collision.
Emergency responders arrived swiftly at the scene, but the damage had already been done. Five people, including a minor, were declared dead on the scene. The victims included drivers and passengers from the vehicles involved. Two other individuals sustained critical injuries and were treated by paramedics before being rushed to FH Odendaal Hospital in Modimolle for urgent medical care.
Authorities confirmed that the suspected driver responsible for the crash survived and was immediately taken into custody. He remains under police guard in hospital. Initial reports suggest that he may have been under the influence of alcohol and possibly other substances at the time of the accident. Although one lane of the highway has been reopened, traffic delays persisted for hours following the accident. Motorists have been advised to remain patient and vigilant while travelling.
