A devastating road accident in the Eastern Cape has claimed the lives of three people, leaving families shattered and communities in mourning. The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, 4 April 2026, along the R67 route between Seymour and Whittlesea.
According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, the accident happened at approximately 01:00 and involved two vehicles — a sport utility vehicle (SUV) carrying three occupants and a sedan with a single driver. The circumstances leading up to the collision are still under investigation, but the impact proved to be catastrophic.
Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose confirmed that two people traveling in the SUV lost their lives after the vehicle caught fire following the crash. The flames quickly engulfed the vehicle, leaving the occupants trapped inside. Tragically, both victims were unable to escape the burning wreckage.
In a remarkable yet heartbreaking turn of events, a 13-year-old boy who was also inside the SUV managed to survive. Despite the terrifying situation, he reportedly crawled out of the burning vehicle and was later rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. His condition has not been fully disclosed, but authorities have expressed hope for his recovery.
Meanwhile, the driver of the sedan, who was alone at the time of the crash, also sustained fatal injuries. Emergency responders declared him dead at the scene. This brings the total number of lives lost in the accident to three.
Law enforcement authorities have since opened a case of culpable homicide as part of ongoing investigations into the cause of the accident. Officials are working to determine what led to the crash, including whether factors such as speeding, driver fatigue, or poor visibility may have played a role.
Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha has extended his heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died in the crash. He also sent well wishes to the young survivor, hoping for his full and speedy recovery during this difficult time.
Binqose described the incident as a “devastating reminder” of the dangers that continue to plague the province’s roads, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours when visibility is reduced and driver fatigue is more common.
