A former nurse and her former gardener have been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of orchestrating the murder of a young woman in a chilling insurance fraud scheme worth nearly R6 million.
The Johannesburg High Court handed down the sentences to 49-year-old Hapiness Sithembile Xulu and 40-year-old Simon Isaac Mogale for the murder of 29-year-old Busisiwe Nxumalo. The court heard that the crime was carefully planned and motivated by the prospect of a massive insurance payout.
According to evidence presented during the trial, Xulu, who was the victim’s stepmother, secretly took out several life and funeral insurance policies in Nxumalo’s name without her knowledge or consent. Xulu allegedly listed herself as the sole beneficiary on the policies, positioning herself to receive millions of rand in the event of Nxumalo’s death.

The court was told that the policies were secured only a few months before the murder. Investigators later uncovered evidence suggesting that Xulu had gone even further by opening a bank account in Nxumalo’s name and using fraudulent means to facilitate the insurance applications.
Just four months after the policies were taken out, Nxumalo was murdered in what prosecutors described as a calculated and ruthless plot.
During the investigation, authorities uncovered details linking both Xulu and Mogale to the crime. Mogale eventually confessed and provided information about how the murder was carried out. He told the court that Xulu transported him to the location where Nxumalo was lying unconscious and supplied him with a knife.
According to his confession, Xulu promised him R60,000 in exchange for carrying out the killing. This testimony played a significant role in exposing the full extent of the conspiracy and establishing the involvement of both accused individuals.
The scheme began to unravel when insurance companies became suspicious. Claims were reportedly submitted shortly after the policies had been taken out, raising red flags among investigators. The unusual timing prompted a deeper investigation, which ultimately revealed the fraudulent activities and the murder plot behind the insurance claims.
As the evidence mounted, prosecutors successfully demonstrated that the murder had been committed solely for financial gain. The court found that both Xulu and Mogale acted together in carrying out the crime, leading to their convictions.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Mohamed Ismail described Xulu as the mastermind behind the operation. The judge noted that the murder was driven by greed and reflected a complete disregard for human life. He emphasized that the victim had been targeted by someone she should have been able to trust.
Both Xulu and Mogale received life sentences for murder. In addition, Xulu was handed further prison terms for multiple counts of fraud linked to the insurance scheme and related criminal activities.
The tragic case has shocked many South Africans, highlighting the devastating consequences of greed and betrayal. Busisiwe Nxumalo’s life was cut short in a senseless act motivated by money, leaving her family and loved ones to mourn a loss that can never be replaced.
The court’s ruling sends a strong message that those who exploit and harm others for financial gain will face the full force of the law.
