The March and March movement has announced the suspension of outspoken activist and former radio presenter Ngizwe Mchunu pending the outcome of an internal investigation into allegations of misconduct. The decision follows a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting where leaders discussed concerns about alleged interference within the organisation.
According to the movement, the suspension is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting its integrity while investigations continue. The organisation said it remains committed to transparency and accountability and believes the matter should be handled thoroughly before any final decisions are made.
In a statement, March and March claimed that its Governance and Legal Compliance structures had uncovered information suggesting attempts by external political and business interests to influence the movement. The organisation alleges that these efforts were intended to interfere with its operations and leadership.
Among the concerns raised were allegations that certain individuals may have accepted benefits in exchange for influencing the movement’s direction. While the organisation did not release specific evidence or identify all those involved, it said the allegations were serious enough to justify Mchunu’s temporary suspension while further investigations take place.
March and March stressed that the suspension should not be viewed as a declaration of guilt. Instead, it said the decision was taken to ensure that the investigation proceeds fairly and without interference.
Mchunu has become one of the movement’s most recognisable public figures in recent months. He has participated in several demonstrations and public campaigns alongside March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, advocating for stronger action against illegal immigration and other issues affecting local communities.
However, speculation about his standing within the organisation grew after reports emerged that he, together with fellow activist Phakelumthakathi, attended a meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa ahead of one of the movement’s major campaigns. The reported meeting raised questions among some supporters, with concerns about whether it aligned with the movement’s objectives.
Although Phakelumthakathi later reaffirmed his commitment to the organisation, Mchunu has not publicly addressed the reports or explained his role in the meeting. His silence has led to increased speculation about the circumstances surrounding the suspension.
The latest development comes only weeks after Mchunu’s home in Mbumbulu, south of Durban, was reportedly set alight in what was widely condemned by supporters and community members. At the time, leaders within March and March publicly expressed solidarity with him, making the current suspension a significant shift in their relationship.
Despite the controversy, the organisation insists that it remains focused on its mission and will continue its activities while the investigation proceeds. It has also encouraged supporters to allow the process to run its course and avoid spreading unverified information.
