An investigation is underway after an 82-year-old man died during a tragic incident at an indoor shooting range in Durbanville, Cape Town, leaving staff and customers deeply shaken.
The incident occurred at Dave Sheer Guns, a firearm dealership situated at the Groot Phesantekraal View Shopping Centre. According to authorities, the elderly man had visited the store last Thursday and purchased ammunition before entering the indoor shooting range with his own licensed firearm.
Western Cape police have confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the man’s death. Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said investigators are still gathering information and that the inquiry remains ongoing. An inquest is conducted to determine the cause of an unnatural death and whether any criminal activity was involved.

According to information shared by an employee familiar with the incident, the man was reportedly visiting the store for the first time. He purchased three cartridges before proceeding alone into the shooting range.
Staff members reportedly became concerned after hearing a loud gunshot followed by an unusual period of silence. When they entered the range to check on him, they discovered the elderly man had died.
An employee who spoke about the incident said it appeared the man had arrived with the intention of taking his own life. However, police have not officially confirmed the cause of death, and investigators are continuing to examine all the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Following the arrival of emergency services and police, officers secured the scene while forensic investigations were carried out. Once authorities had completed their initial work, the firearm store resumed normal business operations.
A senior staff member at the dealership rejected speculation circulating on social media suggesting negligence or any form of security breach at the business. The employee stressed that there had been no hostage situation and that the matter remains the subject of a formal police inquest.
Dave Sheer Guns opened at the Groot Phesantekraal View Shopping Centre in August 2025 and is preparing to celebrate its first anniversary. According to reports, this is the first fatal incident recorded at the premises since the business began operating.
Police have urged the public to avoid speculation while detectives continue gathering evidence. More information is expected to be released once the investigation has been completed.
