Controversial businessman and self-proclaimed crime intelligence agent Brown Mogotsi has been arrested on charges related to allegedly defeating the ends of justice after police claimed he staged an assassination attempt against himself in Vosloorus, Gauteng.
The arrest follows months of speculation surrounding a November 2025 shooting incident in which Mogotsi claimed he survived an ambush by unknown gunmen while driving in the area. At the time, reports indicated that multiple shots were fired at his vehicle, sparking concerns about his safety and possible links to underworld activities and political tensions.

According to police, a multidisciplinary team executed a warrant of arrest after investigations raised suspicions that the alleged assassination attempt may have been fabricated. Authorities said preliminary findings suggested the incident was staged and that the firearm used during the shooting had also been linked to several other violent crimes, including murder and attempted murder cases.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the investigation focused on an alleged attempt to mislead law enforcement authorities. She stated that the case stemmed from “the alleged staging of an attempted assassination on the suspect’s life in Vosloorus.”
Eyewitness accounts also played a major role in intensifying suspicions around the incident. One witness reportedly told investigators that a man driving a red Chevrolet parked near the N3 highway before stepping out with a firearm and allegedly shooting at the vehicle himself. The witness described the ordeal as traumatic, saying nearby residents fled in fear after hearing gunshots.

Mogotsi’s arrest comes amid increasing public attention surrounding his alleged links to influential political figures and ongoing testimony linked to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. The commission has been investigating allegations of corruption, political interference, and organised crime within the criminal justice system.
Over the past several months, Mogotsi has repeatedly made headlines after being accused of having connections to high-ranking politicians, senior police officials, and controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Allegations presented before the commission suggested that Mogotsi acted as an intermediary between politicians, police officials, and individuals allegedly involved in organised criminal networks.
Despite the accusations, Mogotsi has denied wrongdoing and previously insisted that he worked as a legitimate intelligence contact and anti-crime activist. He has also claimed that his life was in danger due to the sensitive information he allegedly possessed.
His arrest reportedly took place shortly after appearing at the Madlanga Commission, where he had been expected to address several allegations made against him. Reports indicate that he was taken into custody while travelling back to Johannesburg.
Mogotsi was expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court facing charges of defeating the ends of justice. The case is likely to attract significant public and political interest as investigators continue probing alleged links between organised crime networks and individuals in positions of influence.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges as investigations continue.
