The heartbreaking murder of young pharmacist Nomzila Bayabonga Madinane has taken an even more disturbing turn after her family revealed that she had allegedly received death threats before she was gunned down at her newly opened pharmacy in KwaNyuswa, near Hillcrest in KwaZulu-Natal.
Nomzila, aged 27, was killed alongside her cashier, Melissa Sbanda, during a violent shooting that shocked residents and left the community mourning the loss of two women whose lives were cut short in a brutal attack. According to reports, three armed men allegedly stormed into the pharmacy and opened fire, fatally wounding both women.

The tragic incident reportedly happened only a week after the pharmacy officially opened its doors to the public. Family members and community residents say Nomzila had worked tirelessly to establish the business after recognising that people in the area struggled to access medication and healthcare services without travelling long distances.
Many people described the young pharmacist as hardworking, passionate, and deeply committed to improving the lives of people in her community. Her dream of bringing healthcare services closer to residents has now ended in tragedy, leaving family members devastated and searching for answers.
Adding to the growing shock surrounding the case, Nomzila’s family has now alleged that she had previously received threats to her life from a former romantic partner. Relatives claim concerns about her safety had been raised before the fatal shooting took place.

At this stage, police have not confirmed whether the alleged threats are linked to the deadly attack. Authorities have also not officially announced a motive for the shooting, and no arrests have yet been confirmed in connection with the killings.
The attack also left a security guard seriously injured. Reports indicate that the officer attempted to intervene during the shooting but was shot during the confrontation. He was rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical condition while receiving medical treatment.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, where South Africans have expressed anger over the continued violence targeting young professionals and business owners. Many people have also called for a thorough investigation into the murders and urged law enforcement authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Community members in KwaNyuswa and surrounding areas say the loss of Nomzila is particularly painful because she represented hope and progress for many young people in the township. Her pharmacy was seen as a positive development that would improve healthcare access and create opportunities within the community.
Friends, relatives, and supporters have continued sharing messages of grief and condolences online, remembering Nomzila as a caring and ambitious young woman who had a bright future ahead of her. Tributes have also poured in for cashier Melissa Sbanda, whose life was also tragically lost during the attack.
As investigations continue, the grieving families are hoping for answers and justice while the community struggles to come to terms with the devastating killings that have shaken KwaNyuswa.
