The March and March movement has confirmed the death of one of its regional leaders in Ekurhuleni after he was fatally shot in what the organisation believes was a targeted attack.
According to the movement, Andile Somgxada was gunned down outside his home on 4 July while leaving the property. He was rushed to hospital with critical injuries but later died on Thursday after spending several days receiving medical treatment.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the organisation, which has become widely known for campaigning against illegal immigration in South Africa. March and March says Somgxada played a key leadership role in mobilising community members and supporting the movement’s activities in Ekurhuleni.

Speaking after the confirmation of his death, March and March spokesperson Sandile Dube alleged that the organisation and its members have been subjected to ongoing threats because of their outspoken position on undocumented migration.
Dube claimed that the movement has received numerous death threats from different parts of the country, saying the intimidation has increased as the organisation continues its campaigns.
“We have been receiving death threats, including those directed at our leader in Ekurhuleni,” Dube said. “There are many threats being made against members of March and March across South Africa because we are advocating for what we believe is in the best interests of South Africans.”
While the exact motive behind Somgxada’s killing has not yet been confirmed, members of the movement suspect the attack may have been linked to his activism. Authorities have not publicly announced any arrests or identified suspects in connection with the shooting, and investigations into the incident are expected to continue.
The death comes at a time when March and March has intensified its activities in several communities, organising demonstrations and public campaigns calling for stricter action against undocumented migrants. The movement has attracted both strong support and criticism for its stance, with supporters arguing that it is highlighting concerns over illegal immigration, while critics have urged restraint and called for the protection of migrants’ rights.
In recent weeks, the organisation has announced plans for nationwide marches and has been active in communities across Gauteng and other provinces. Some of its demonstrations have drawn large crowds, while others have been met with opposition from civil society groups and religious organisations advocating compassion and lawful treatment of migrants.
Somgxada’s death has added to concerns about the safety of community activists involved in contentious public issues. Members of March and March have called for a thorough investigation into the shooting and urged law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The movement says it will continue with its campaigns despite the tragedy, insisting that it will not be intimidated by threats or violence. At the same time, it has appealed for greater protection for its members as they carry out their activities.
Police have not yet released further details regarding the investigation, and the motive behind the fatal shooting remains under investigation.
