**Heroic Stand Against M23 Rebels**

In a remarkable display of bravery, South African National Defence Force (SANDF) troops killed at least 600 M23 rebels in a brutal 24-hour battle in Sake, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The fierce confrontation, which took place last week, resulted in the loss of nine South African soldiers and has been described as one of the most intense battles in recent history.

South African soldiers have been hailed as heroes for their resilience and courage in the face of overwhelming odds. The details of the battle were confirmed by an award-winning journalist who was present during the fight while researching his book. His account was supported by government officials in both South Africa and the DRC.

## **An Unexpected Ambush**

The journalist, who requested anonymity due to security concerns, revealed that SANDF troops were left exposed when their allies, including members of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and Burundian troops, surrendered or fled the battlefield.

“The DRC troops were supposed to cover a different flank, but they disappeared. Suddenly, the South African soldiers found themselves under attack from mortars and heavy gunfire,” Deputy Defence Minister General Bantu Holomisa confirmed.

Despite being outnumbered and under siege, SANDF soldiers held their ground and fought valiantly. “Your soldiers fought like heroes and took down more than 100 M23 rebels. I saw it with my own eyes,” said a senior editor writing for an international publication.

Reports indicate that the death toll among the rebels may have been even higher, with some estimates suggesting that SANDF forces eliminated between 600 and 1,000 fighters.

## **The High Cost of Battle**

The battle took a heavy toll on the SANDF. Nine South African soldiers were killed in action, while additional casualties included one Tanzanian and two Malawian troops, who were part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) peacekeeping force. The death toll increased to 14 after another South African soldier succumbed to gunshot wounds in the hospital.

The SANDF released a statement confirming the deaths and highlighting the bravery of the troops. According to the statement, three South African soldiers were killed when an M23 mortar attack struck their base. Despite the casualties, SANDF forces maintained discipline and upheld international war conventions.

To allow M23 rebels to collect their dead, SANDF troops raised white flags, signaling a temporary ceasefire. “Bodies of M23 fighters were lying everywhere. Our soldiers followed international protocols, showing discipline even in the heat of battle,” a senior editor said.

Holomisa confirmed that this humanitarian act also allowed SANDF troops to evacuate their wounded soldiers for medical treatment.

## **A Major Blow to M23**

Sources in the DRC reported that M23 rebels later cremated their dead to conceal the extent of their losses. This act suggests the heavy defeat suffered by the rebel group at the hands of SANDF forces.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, commander-in-chief of the South African military, paid tribute to the fallen soldiers. “These brave men were dedicated to their mission and committed to peace. Their sacrifice must never be forgotten,” Ramaphosa said in a statement. He urged South Africans to rally behind their troops and recognize their efforts in bringing stability to the continent.

## **Challenges in Peacekeeping Missions**

The battle in Sake, just 23 kilometers from the city of Goma, underscores the dangers of peacekeeping missions in war zones. Despite their remarkable resilience, SANDF troops were left vulnerable due to the failure of their allies to hold the front line.

The surrender of FARDC troops and the retreat of Burundian forces created a dangerous situation, forcing South African soldiers to fight against overwhelming odds. The incident raises concerns about the effectiveness of multinational peacekeeping operations when partner forces fail to stand their ground.

## **A Call for Unity and Support**

As South Africa mourns its fallen soldiers, there is growing support for the SANDF and calls for greater accountability in peacekeeping missions. Many have praised the courage and professionalism of the South African troops, but the battle also highlights the need for stronger international cooperation.

“Our troops fought with great courage and repelled the rebels in a major way,” Holomisa stated. His sentiments reflect the admiration many South Africans feel for their soldiers’ sacrifice.

The battle of Sake will be remembered as a defining moment in SANDF history, demonstrating the courage and resilience of South African troops. While the loss of 14 soldiers is a painful reminder of the risks of peacekeeping, their bravery has struck a major blow against the M23 rebels and reinforced South Africa’s commitment to continental stability.
