Residents of Ramotse in Hammanskraal, north of Tshwane, say they are living in fear following the brutal murder of an elderly woman whose death has left the community shaken and demanding justice. Four suspects have since been arrested in connection with the incident and are facing serious charges, including murder, rape, and housebreaking.
The victim, 84-year-old Maneli Junior Mongoya, was found dead at her home on 2 June. According to family members, the elderly woman lived alone and was known as a kind and respected member of the community. Her tragic death has sparked outrage among residents, who say violent crimes against vulnerable people are becoming increasingly common.

Speaking after the suspects appeared in court, family members said they are still struggling to come to terms with the horrific loss. Mongoya’s granddaughter, Merriam Molomo, described the emotional pain of seeing the accused in court and insisted that they should not be granted bail. She said the family wants justice and hopes those responsible receive the harshest possible punishment.
The victim’s sister, Florah Gwezela, expressed deep anger and sadness over the killing, saying the family remains devastated by the circumstances surrounding Mongoya’s death. Other relatives echoed similar sentiments, describing her passing as a painful tragedy that has left lasting emotional scars.
Community members have also voiced their fears following the incident. Many residents say they no longer feel safe walking around at night and worry that elderly people living alone could become targets of criminals. Some have called for stronger policing and increased security measures in the area to prevent similar crimes from occurring.
According to reports, investigators arrested four men between the ages of 29 and 38 in connection with the case. Police confirmed that investigations are continuing as authorities work to establish all the details surrounding the crime. The suspects recently appeared before the Moretele Magistrate’s Court, where the matter was postponed for further proceedings.
The murder has also attracted attention from community leaders and political representatives. They have condemned the attack and called for a tougher response to violent crimes, particularly those targeting women, children, and elderly citizens. Several leaders argued that communities cannot continue living in fear while vulnerable residents are subjected to such brutal acts.
As the case moves through the courts, residents of Ramotse say they will continue to support the victim’s family and monitor the legal process closely. Their hope is that justice will be served and that the tragic death of Maneli Junior Mongoya will lead to stronger action against crime in the area.
For now, grief and fear continue to hang over the community as residents mourn the loss of a woman whose life ended in a senseless act of violence.
