Tragedy Strikes in Burnsville, Minnesota: 8-Year-Old Amir Harden Loses Life Protecting Mother from Father’s Bullets

A heart-wrenching incident has shaken the community of Burnsville, Minnesota, after an 8-year-old boy, Amir Harden, sacrificed his life to shield his mother from his father’s deadly wrath. The devastating event occurred on June 5, leaving family, friends, and the community to grapple with the aftermath of domestic violence.

Amir’s father, 30-year-old Danair Harden, had a history of domestic disputes and possessed a gun permit. Despite his mother’s concerns and previous encounters with law enforcement, Danair’s violent tendencies escalated, culminating in the fatal shooting.

According to the Burnsville Police Department, officers responded to the shooting around 11:48 p.m. on June 5, finding Amir and an adult in critical condition. Danair Harden shot himself in the head immediately after shooting his son. Authorities believe the family situation led up to the incident, with other people present in the home at the time.

In a poignant account on a GoFundMe page, Amir’s mother, Cherish Edwards, revealed that she was the intended target. Amir, in a heroic attempt to protect his mother, tried to wrestle the gun away from his father and was shot in the process. Edwards recalled Amir’s final words, “Mommy, I’m not leaving you here.”

The tragic event has left the community reeling, with Amir’s four siblings, who witnessed the shooting, struggling to come to terms with their loss. Edwards, consumed by grief and guilt, has urged other mothers experiencing domestic violence to seek help and not overlook danger signs.

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence highlights the stark reality that one in three women experience physical violence by an intimate partner, and the presence of a gun in such situations increases the risk of homicide by 500%. Amir’s story serves as a heart-wrenching reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of young Amir Harden, whose bravery in the face of danger will never be forgotten. His legacy serves as a reminder to prioritize domestic violence awareness and prevention, ensuring no other family suffers a similar tragedy.
