A survivor of the deadly tavern shooting in Wedela, near Carletonville in Gauteng, has described the terrifying moments he experienced when armed attackers opened fire on people gathered at the establishment.
According to the survivor’s account, the shooting initially started outside the tavern before the gunmen entered the premises and continued firing. The sudden attack left people scrambling for safety as panic spread through the area.
As those inside attempted to escape, the survivor made the decision to remain on the floor. He said people ran past him and some reportedly stepped over him as they desperately tried to get away from the gunfire.
Rather than attempting to flee, he stayed where he was, praying and avoiding any sudden movements that could draw the attention of the attackers.
For him, the priority was simply to survive.
The survivor was also forced to witness the loss of his best friend during the shooting, adding another painful layer to an already traumatic experience. The attack left 17 people dead, while 15 others were wounded.
The incident has since left families mourning loved ones and a community trying to come to terms with the scale of the violence.
Police have launched a manhunt for eight armed suspects believed to be connected to the shooting. Investigators are continuing to work to establish exactly what led to the attack and identify those responsible.
