A devastating road accident on the N6 highway between East London and Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape has claimed the lives of five people and left more than 60 others injured. The tragic crash, which occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, involved a VW Polo and a large bus transporting around 60 passengers from Zimbabwe.
The usually quiet and scenic route quickly turned into a scene of chaos and heartbreak as emergency services rushed to assist the injured and recover the victims from the wreckage.

According to reports from the scene, the collision happened when the VW Polo and the bus crashed head-on along a dark stretch of the highway. The impact was so severe that the smaller vehicle was completely crushed, leaving its five occupants dead at the scene. Witnesses described the Polo as being trapped underneath the bus, highlighting the extreme force of the collision.
Emergency response teams, including paramedics, police officers, and rescue personnel, worked tirelessly for hours to assist survivors and clear the wreckage. The bus, which was carrying Zimbabwean nationals traveling home after spending time working in South Africa, was heavily damaged during the crash.

Several passengers on the bus sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. Among the injured were children and elderly passengers, some of whom required urgent medical treatment and were transported to nearby hospitals in East London.
Survivors recounted the terrifying moments immediately after the crash. One passenger who was seated near the back of the bus said the sound of the collision was incredibly loud and sudden.
“It felt like an explosion,” the survivor said. “People were screaming and trying to get out. The doors were stuck, and some of us had to crawl through broken windows to escape.”
The scene was described as chaotic, with injured passengers calling out for help while others searched for family members who had been seated nearby. The smell of diesel and burning rubber filled the air as emergency responders worked quickly to secure the area.
Family members of the victims later arrived at the scene, where many were overcome with grief. One relative said her brother had been among the occupants of the VW Polo and had been traveling to visit family for the weekend.
“He had so many plans and dreams,” she said through tears. “Now we have lost him in such a terrible way.”
Authorities closed the N6 highway for more than 12 hours while investigators and forensic teams worked to examine the crash site and remove debris scattered across the road.
Police have opened a case of culpable homicide while investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the collision. Early indications suggest that one of the vehicles may have attempted to overtake another vehicle along a poorly lit section of the highway, leading to the fatal crash.
The tragedy has once again raised concerns about road safety in South Africa, with calls for stricter regulations for long-distance transport and increased police visibility on major highways.
As investigations continue, the accident stands as a painful reminder of the dangers on the country’s roads and the devastating impact a single moment can have on countless families.
