Aqueelah Adendorf, the partner of the late Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams, has publicly addressed the rumours and accusations circulating on social media following the footballer’s tragic death. Her statement comes shortly after Adams was laid to rest in Stellenbosch, where family, friends, teammates and members of the South African football community gathered to pay their final respects.
Adams, who was 25 years old, reportedly died earlier this month. His passing has left South Africans mourning the loss of one of the country’s most talented young footballers. While tributes have continued to pour in, speculation surrounding the circumstances of his death has also spread widely online, with some social media users unfairly targeting his girlfriend.
Breaking her silence on Instagram, Aqueelah expressed heartbreak over what she described as false stories and damaging assumptions being made about her. She said it was painful to see herself portrayed as the villain based solely on rumours and misinformation.
According to her statement, she does not feel obligated to explain her personal life to strangers, but she appealed to the public to stop spreading false information. She also urged people to allow Jayden Adams to be remembered with dignity rather than turning his name into the centre of unverified stories and online speculation.
Aqueelah is the mother of Adams’s five-year-old daughter. The late footballer also leaves behind a young son from another relationship.
Her statement follows reports published earlier that claimed the couple had allegedly been involved in an argument after visiting a nightclub just hours before Adams reportedly died. The reports suggested that the disagreement centred around finances and his friends, although these claims have fuelled intense online debate without official confirmation.
As the rumours continued to circulate, Aqueelah reportedly became the target of online abuse, including death threats.
During Adams’s funeral service, Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie publicly defended her, condemning those who had rushed to assign blame. Speaking directly to Aqueelah, he acknowledged the criticism she had endured and encouraged her not to let public opinion define her.
McKenzie revealed that he had personally spoken to Jayden Adams before his death and said he understood how much the footballer cared for Aqueelah. He thanked her for standing by Adams and reminded mourners that outsiders could never fully understand the realities of a couple’s private relationship.
Earlier in the week, McKenzie also used a Facebook Live broadcast to address the situation, saying he had contacted Aqueelah to offer his support. He confirmed that he was aware of the threats being made against her and stressed that disagreements are a normal part of relationships.
He questioned the lack of compassion shown by some members of the public, pointing out that Aqueelah was grieving the loss of the father of her child while simultaneously dealing with online harassment and abuse.
As investigations into the circumstances surrounding Jayden Adams’s death continue, his family and loved ones have appealed for privacy and respect. Many within the football community have also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified claims and instead remember Adams for his achievements, talent and contribution to South African football.
