More than five years after the death of Anele Tembe and over two years since the fatal shooting of her fiancé, award-winning rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, both cases continue to attract widespread public attention. The recent start of a long-awaited inquest into Tembe’s death has once again placed the tragedy under the spotlight, with many South Africans hoping the legal process will finally provide long-awaited answers.
A Relationship in the Public Eye
Anele Tembe, the daughter of respected Durban businessman Moses Tembe, was in a high-profile relationship with rapper AKA. Their romance frequently made headlines, with the couple sharing moments of their relationship on social media before announcing their engagement.
Although they appeared happy in public, reports later suggested that the relationship experienced several challenges. Allegations of previous domestic disputes would eventually become part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Tembe’s death.
Anele Tembe’s Death
On 11 April 2021, the 22-year-old died after falling from the 10th floor of the Pepperclub Hotel in Cape Town, where she had been staying with AKA. The rapper had been due to perform later that day, but the shocking incident immediately dominated national headlines.
While initial reports pointed to the possibility of suicide, Tembe’s family disputed that conclusion and insisted a thorough investigation was necessary. They maintained that several unanswered questions remained and continued to seek further legal action.
No Prosecution and Renewed Calls for Justice
In June 2022, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced that no one would be prosecuted in connection with Tembe’s death. The decision disappointed her family, who continued to campaign for the matter to be revisited.
The case remained in the public eye as calls for a fresh investigation grew stronger.
AKA’s Murder Changes the Course of the Case
Another devastating tragedy struck on 10 February 2023 when AKA and his close friend, celebrity chef Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, were shot dead outside a restaurant on Florida Road in Durban.
Police described the killings as a carefully planned assassination. Several suspects were later arrested and charged with offences including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder and firearm-related crimes. Prosecutors have indicated that dozens of witnesses are expected to testify when the murder trial proceeds.
AKA’s death meant he could no longer provide his account of the events leading up to Tembe’s passing, making the inquest even more significant.
Inquest Finally Begins
On 13 July 2026, the long-awaited inquest into Anele Tembe’s death officially opened in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court. The proceedings aim to determine whether her death resulted from suicide, an accident or possible criminal conduct, and whether anyone can be held legally responsible.
Ahead of the hearing, new evidence reportedly emerged, including text messages said to have been exchanged between AKA, Tembe and legal representatives. Some of the messages referred to previous incidents involving Tembe’s mental health, while others were presented as part of efforts to clarify events leading up to her death.
The Tembe family argued that the new material should be carefully examined alongside earlier evidence.
Hearing Postponed
Despite years of anticipation, the proceedings were unexpectedly interrupted after the presiding magistrate reportedly suffered a medical emergency. As a result, witness testimony could not continue and the matter was postponed.
The inquest has since been rescheduled for September 2026, when witnesses are expected to give evidence over several days.
Public Interest Remains High
The postponement has done little to reduce public interest in the case. Members of both the Tembe and Forbes families have continued to express their hopes that the court process will establish the facts surrounding Anele Tembe’s death.
For many South Africans, the inquest represents an opportunity to finally obtain clarity after years of speculation and unanswered questions. While the legal process continues, both families remain in search of closure following two tragedies that have left a lasting impact on the country.
