The community of KwaNyuswa near Hillcrest in KwaZulu-Natal has been left shaken and heartbroken following the tragic killing of a young pharmacy owner and her cashier during a violent attack at a newly opened pharmacy. The incident, which took place just days after the business officially opened its doors, has sparked outrage and sadness among residents who viewed the pharmacy as a much-needed service for the area.
According to reports, the victims have been identified as Nomzila Madinane, the owner of the pharmacy, and Melissa Sbanda, who worked as a cashier at the establishment. It is alleged that three armed men entered the pharmacy and opened fire on the two women before fleeing the scene. Both victims sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were declared dead at the scene.

The attack reportedly happened only a week after the pharmacy was launched. Community members say Nomzila had opened the business with the aim of helping local residents gain easier access to medication and healthcare products. Before the pharmacy opened, many people in the area were reportedly forced to travel long distances to town to collect prescriptions and purchase medicine.
Residents described Nomzila as a determined young entrepreneur who wanted to make a positive difference in her community. Many say her decision to establish the pharmacy brought hope to local families, particularly elderly residents and those without reliable transport. The shocking incident has therefore left many questioning why such violence would target a business that was created to help the community.
During the shooting, a security officer who allegedly attempted to intervene was also shot. Reports indicate that the guard suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital for emergency medical treatment. At the time of reporting, he was said to be fighting for his life.
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack. Police are expected to determine whether the incident was linked to a robbery or if there may have been another motive behind the killings. No arrests had been confirmed at the time of publication, and investigators are continuing to gather evidence.
The deaths of Nomzila and Melissa have triggered an emotional response on social media, where many South Africans expressed their condolences and frustration over the ongoing violence affecting communities across the country. Others called for stronger protection for small business owners, particularly young entrepreneurs trying to build businesses in underserved communities.
Friends, family members, and residents have continued to pay tribute to the two women, describing them as hardworking, kind-hearted, and ambitious individuals whose lives were cut tragically short. Messages of support have also been directed toward the injured security officer and the families affected by the tragedy.
The heartbreaking incident has once again highlighted concerns about crime and safety in South Africa, especially for small businesses operating in local communities. As investigations continue, many residents are hoping justice will be served and those responsible for the deadly attack will soon be brought before the courts.
The KwaNyuswa community now mourns the loss of two young women whose dream of serving their community ended in unimaginable tragedy.
