A 51-year-old businessman from Polokwane has been arrested in connection with two separate arson incidents that occurred in Limpopo, causing an estimated R800,000 in damages. While police have not revealed the suspect’s identity, speculation on social media has linked the arrest to a prominent anti-drug activist, although these claims remain unverified.
The suspect was taken into custody on Monday during a police operation at his home in the Welgelegen suburb of Polokwane. The arrest followed an intensive investigation led by the South African Police Service (SAPS), with support from tracking specialists and crime intelligence officers.

During the operation, police also seized a Toyota Fortuner, which investigators believe may have been used during the commission of the alleged offences. The vehicle will form part of the ongoing investigation.
According to police, the first incident occurred in the early hours of a Saturday morning in late June. At approximately 4:30 am, a signboard belonging to a rehabilitation centre on Dendron Road in Ladanna was deliberately set alight, causing significant damage.
Shortly afterwards, another fire was reported in Seshego Zone 3, where a Toyota Hilux double-cab was allegedly set on fire outside a residential property. The blaze quickly spread and threatened a nearby house where seven people were asleep at the time.

Fortunately, residents acted swiftly and managed to contain the flames before emergency services arrived, preventing what could have been a devastating tragedy. Although no injuries were reported, the combined damage from both incidents has been estimated at around R800,000.
The cases were initially investigated by separate police stations before provincial detectives took over due to similarities between the incidents. Investigators reportedly relied on forensic evidence, intelligence gathering, and digital tracking to identify the suspect.
The businessman now faces two counts of arson and malicious damage to property. He is expected to appear before both the Polokwane and Seshego Magistrate’s Courts as the legal process unfolds.
Despite widespread online speculation, SAPS has not confirmed the identity of the arrested man. Numerous social media users have suggested that the suspect is a well-known anti-drug campaigner associated with the Limpopo Anti-Drugs Gangsterism and Crime (LADGAC) forum. However, these claims have not been verified by law enforcement authorities.
The arrest has sparked mixed reactions online. Some users questioned whether the rehabilitation centre targeted in the attack belonged to the suspect or someone else, while others discussed reports that a house and vehicle had been set on fire in Seshego.
The incident has also generated debate among supporters of anti-drug initiatives. Some social media users expressed concern that the arrest could negatively affect efforts to combat drug-related crime, while others stressed that the investigation should be allowed to take its course without speculation.
Police have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information and to allow the judicial process to determine the facts. Investigations into both arson cases remain ongoing, and authorities have indicated that additional evidence may still be presented as the matter proceeds through the courts.
The case has attracted significant public attention in Limpopo, with many residents awaiting further developments as the businessman prepares to face the charges against him.
