Police have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the murder of 18-year-old Nhlamulo Sambo, whose death shocked residents of Mossel Bay amid recent unrest in the area.
The suspect was taken into custody following an investigation into Sambo’s fatal stabbing, which occurred during the early hours of Sunday morning in Kwanonqaba township. Authorities have confirmed that the arrested man is expected to appear in court soon on charges related to the teenager’s death.
Sambo’s killing happened during a tense period in Mossel Bay, where protests and unrest linked to concerns over undocumented foreign nationals resulted in violence, destruction of property, and the displacement of hundreds of residents. The timing of the incident initially led many community members to believe that the teenager may have been a victim of the ongoing tensions.

However, police have since clarified that preliminary investigations suggest a different scenario. According to law enforcement officials, evidence gathered so far indicates that Sambo’s death was not directly connected to the anti-immigration unrest that gripped parts of the township.
Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile stated that investigators are treating the murder as a separate incident that happened during the unrest rather than an attack motivated by the demonstrations themselves. While the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing remain under investigation, authorities believe the killing may have resulted from an unrelated confrontation.
Despite the distinction, police leaders have strongly condemned all forms of violence and called on residents to remain calm and allow the justice system to take its course. Patekile emphasized that regardless of the motive behind the crime, acts of violence against members of the community cannot be tolerated.
The unrest in Mossel Bay has left a significant impact on the community. Reports indicate that more than 50 informal structures were destroyed during the violence, leaving hundreds of people without shelter. Emergency services and local authorities have been working to assist affected families and restore stability in the area.
The disturbances also claimed additional lives. Two Mozambican nationals were reportedly killed on Friday night during the height of the unrest, raising concerns about the safety of foreign nationals living in the region. Community leaders and human rights groups have urged residents to reject violence and seek peaceful solutions to concerns surrounding immigration and local economic challenges.
In recent days, calm has gradually returned to Kwanonqaba and surrounding areas. A strong police presence remains in place to prevent further incidents and reassure residents. Officers continue to monitor the situation closely while investigations into both the unrest and related criminal cases continue.
For Sambo’s family, the arrest marks an important step toward justice, although the pain of losing the young man remains profound. Friends, relatives, and community members continue to mourn his death while awaiting further developments in the case.
As the legal process unfolds, authorities have urged anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward and assist investigators in ensuring accountability for the tragedy.
