Authorities in Ekurhuleni have arrested several undocumented migrants during a large-scale compliance operation conducted in Vosloorus on Wednesday. The operation targeted businesses suspected of operating illegally and forms part of ongoing efforts to address tensions surrounding illegal immigration and business compliance in local communities.
The coordinated raid, led by Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, focused mainly on spaza shops, supermarkets, and other small businesses operating within the township. Officials inspected trading licenses, immigration documents, and building compliance requirements during the operation.
According to city officials, a number of businesses were issued with notices for failing to comply with municipal regulations. Some shop owners were allegedly found operating with expired business licenses, while others reportedly failed to meet zoning and structural requirements.
During the inspections, authorities also discovered individuals believed to be undocumented foreign nationals working and living within some of the premises. Several arrests were made on-site as law enforcement officials continued verifying the legal status of those detained.
Speaking during the operation, Mayor Xhakaza said officials had shut down one of the supermarkets after uncovering several compliance issues.
“Just now we did a big closure of a supermarket. We realized that some of the people inside did not have documentation. Some arrests were made, but we also discovered that the structure itself was not compliant,” said Xhakaza.
He added that municipal officers are working to ensure all businesses and buildings in the city comply with local regulations and zoning laws.
“It is important that wherever businesses operate, they must be correctly zoned and comply with the law,” he said.
The operation comes amid growing concerns and protests in some communities over the presence of undocumented migrants in South Africa. In recent months, tensions between residents and foreign nationals have intensified in certain areas, with some communities accusing undocumented migrants of contributing to crime, unemployment, and pressure on public services.
Government leaders and community organisations have repeatedly called for calm and lawful engagement while authorities continue dealing with immigration-related challenges.
The Ekurhuleni compliance blitz is part of broader law enforcement efforts aimed at ensuring businesses adhere to municipal by-laws and immigration regulations. Authorities say operations of this nature will continue across different areas of the municipality.
Meanwhile, some residents have welcomed the initiative, saying it is necessary to restore order and ensure fairness among business operators. Others, however, have cautioned against targeting foreign nationals unfairly and called for authorities to protect human rights during enforcement operations.
